It was only a matter of time before Iran’s missile programme would emerge as a flashpoint in US-Iran relations deeper than the nuclear crisis.

Shahir jan thanx for another informed article.
Despite all the long held warnings about the catastrophic ramifications of a massive confrontation between US and Iran, there are entrenched interests in both lands for a war.
Neocons and Sepah are both adept in 'Management through crisis' and war would be a supreme opportunity for them to consolidate their positions.
This is not to underestimate or jettison all other forces and factors working against a war between US and Iran, but only to highlight the forces animating the tensions.
And as you aptly reiterate the aleatory element and sheer unpredictability of events cannot be overemphasized.
Then again at the cost of sounding a bit general, currently whole international relations, on a global scale, seems like a slow motion movement, creeping towards war.

If it walks like a duck quacks like duck but in this instance, not a duck then what?
-American generals are too tired and worn out by the last 16 years of endless wars in ME.
-Shia forces are all over ME every which way US looks.
-Saudis can't wipe their noses without US, hence useless as far as US is concerned.

With every passing day, the specter of war becomes more ominous. Trump has every intention to attack Iran. He sealed the accord during his trip to Saudi Arabia. Saudis and United Arab Emirates along with Israelis have been colluding against Iran for quite some time but now they have become more vocal as they know they have the backing of Washington warmongers. American military will never have enough of wars. Nor will have Washington politicians.

It's a bit ironic to say the least, when Trump's current National Security advisor is a general who made his name writing a book criticizing US military's handling of Vietnam war.

Dereliction of Duty: Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, The Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies that Led to Vietnam

The more it changes, the more it stays the same!?

-Also, Velayat Faghih is extreme but not stupid. They've survived Carter, Saddam, Reagan and Bush. It's not just about how many guns in soldiers' hands or how many bombs fall on land. It's also about Shia ideology which will never surrender.
