Very long indeed. A good editor could easily get rid of half of it.
One big part of all this recent craziness in 'Umerica is just plain, good ol' Racism.
A reaction to the first Black president. This is not to dismiss the political-economy aspect of the crisis, but to point out a concrete feature of it. There was practically no mention of this overarching factor.
On the historical side of it, the 1960's was a decade of profound developments in all the social movements in the US. Far from "a national nervous breakdown" it acted as a wake up to an array of different sub-cultures and sparked various communities of resistance.
Milton Viorst's "Fire in the streets: America in the 1960's" (despite all its limitations) is a good intro to the decade.

Coming back to the present the Race question and all its ramifications should be fully paid attention to; front and center.
