A couple of thoughts about the post submission form/process

1 +

Team,

I've got a couple of things that I'd like to talk about a little bit with regard to submitting stories/posts.

First, I think moving the "Choose a Topic" to the top of the form makes a lot of sense - I nearly always end up finding it 2/3 of the way down the screen and entering it first, since it directly affects the rest of my workflow when filling out a post submission (ie. customizable title dependency on moderator setting for a given topic, etc.). Having it first makes a lot more sense and would smooth out a minor annoyance, I think.

Second, and this might be a larger discussion, but I find that the posts I'd most like to submit would be a combination of link/text - a link that sparked something with me, and some commentary on why I think it's interesting/important.  I've tried to work around this by creating a link post and adding an early comment with commentary, but it's not quite the same.  It feels like we could create a better engagement and quality level of link (or image/video) posts if there was a better mechanism for including commentary about the link being submitted.

I'd also like to be able to submit multiple links (with commentary on each) to create a cohesive "topic" post about an event - something that's newsworthy like the recent discovery of gravitational wave existence could make a cool deeper dive/post in +Science.

Looking forward to feedback, and I'm fully aware you guys probably have a lot of adjustments on the roadmap, so I'm just getting my 2 cents in. :)

Hey James,

Good stuff here as usual. You are correct, we have a very long list of adjustments/feature additions but feedback from the community helps us prioritize. After all, members such as yourself are using the platform most frequently so input is critical.

OK, let's go through your list.

Topic Selection: You have an interesting point here. We have adjusted the order through the dev process to try and make the flow logical. For example, Title was originally the first field on the Video submission but, because we pull the Title from the URL, we moved Title down URL up.

You have solid points for adjusting the placement of the Topic field. It's certainly helpful to know if you whether enter a custom Title, before going to those lengths, for example. Let us toss this one around a bit.

Text on Links: We're right there with you on this one. We are currently working on implementing an optional text field on link submissions. We've run into this case with our own posts many times and usually resort to adding a comment, but optional text is more elegant and one of our high priority enhancements.

Multiple Links: When we rolled out beta we had a List post type. It was very complex and what appeared to be a few minor issues turned out to be significant time requirements. As a result, we removed the List option and are planning to come back to it once we wrap up some of the other priorities (such as text on Links).

We did not support links in the original version, it was more text/images/videos, similar to Buzzfeed. Is this style along the lines of what you're suggesting?

Thanks again for the feedback. We’ll keep you posted on the development of these (and other) options as we are closer.

@john: great feedback, and it all makes sense.

Re: Multiple Links: I think there's definitely a case to be made for the blurring of distinction between images/videos and links - it's all in the same bucket, metadata-wise, to me. Past that, I think you're on the same track regarding the ability to have multiple items (each with an optional text/commentary section associated with it) in a single post. I do think having the List format available for multiple links is nice as well.

Got it. Thanks for the additional clarification on the multiple link feature.

We'll circle up internally and I more info on this later in the week.

Hey @lyncmob

Quick follow-up.

Topic Selection: We'll be moving this to the top of posts and should have it available in our next code release.

The other two items are in dev but will take a bit longer as they're more complicated from a UI/UX perspective.

More to follow!

Hey @lyncmob

I know you've seen this but posting here for posterity.

We have added a "Your thoughts" optional text field to link posts and have also moved Topic selection to the top of the page.

It appears many are using the "Your thoughts" already. Nice suggestion!
