I'm a programmer/architect by trade, and a long-time drummer, vocalist and writer. I grew up hauling hay and tipping cows in rural Kansas and Oklahoma, but have been in the Bay Area for over 15 years now. A cool cat and 3 dope kids round me out.

Although not represented in the essay here,I find another interesting angle to be about the creation of "filter bubbles", where the dynamic interpretation of user data, by algorithm, of a given search engine affects the search results, news, etc. that a given person sees online.

The real issue isn't privatization of prisons, it's the private industries that service them - earlier in my life, I did some significant time, and it's amazing how corrupt the system is, and how much profiteering goes on.

Unreal - they trimmed tenths off of a second from their yellow lights, system-wide, and made 8 million more in ticket revenue over 6 months. Local government profiteering from their citizens - business as usual in the US we're now living in.

I agree that the treatment of Ellen Pao was disgraceful, although I was absolutely not a fan of her tenure there.

She's a pretty poor executive by any objective means, so it just muddies the greater issue of diversity and inclusiveness in tech to have her leading the charge.

Wow, what a ridiculous man Alex St. John is.

I've spent my whole life avoiding environments like that, and am ever so glad I have.

Utterly hilarious. Twitter occasionally redeems itself by being a hilariously chaotic window into the pulse of the world, raw and relatively unfiltered, in 140 characters or less.

It's very interesting, actually, to view the video and see how video games are being used more as a medium for both art and social commentary.

What's truly disgusting is how many people share his worldview. This is the kind of grassroots hate that percolates beneath the ignorant frustration much of this country is smothered in.

A kind of weird intersection of video gaming, video game banning, and interview about such. :)

There's a popular Reddit subreddit called /nottheonion, specifically referring to article titles that look as if they may have been created on the satire site theonion.com.
