"The US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, on Monday outlined a counter set of demands before the country would rejoin the deal that the EU rejected as unrealistic and amounting to regime change in Tehran."

The Europeans might not believe Pompeo's demands are realistic for the purpose of saving the J ... Read more

"And the last time the US launched a coup in Iran -- installing the Shah of Iran in place of the democratically-elected government of Mohammed Mossadeq in 1953 -- the results were counterproductive, to put it mildly."

Well we all know the US didn't "instal" the Shah in 1953, which was his 12th year ... Read more

You are delusional. If America attacks, we're done for. Yeah, it might not all be plain sailing for America, they might suffer some setbacks, but there is no doubt as to who wins.

Two reasons why this won't protect Iran:
1. Take a look at Syria et al. There was no Congressional authorization... "it just happened".
2. HJ Res 10 - Congress can easily authorize action at a later date.

What is behind the strategy, in a single word: war. Everyone knows that.
That doesn't mean a hot war has to happen, but it probably will, because it doesn't look like anyone in Iran or the West is seriously considering a change of course. The decision to go to war with Iran has probably already been ... Read more

This is like a slow motion replay of the lead-up to Iraq all over again. All we are missing now is a 9/11 style catalyst to kick off the war.

"The UK, France and Germany should pledge not to seek negotiations on Iran's ballistic missile programme and regional activities, both demanded by Washington ... Read more

"It should be clear to everyone who is familiar with the Middle East that a war against Iran will not be like Iraq, it will be much worse."

True, but do you think they give a damn? They are going to do it anyway, unless we put the brakes on the process, which we are not doing. We haven't given them ... Read more

I don't think America is bluffing here, and I don't think the mullahs and their cronies truly believe that either.

The most powerful nation in world history, which has spent the last 20 years crushing country after country, has just issued a list of demands and threats, and you dismiss it as nonsen ... Read more

People have some strange ideas about Russia's position vis-a-vis Israel, Iran etc. Russia never had any intention of going to war with Israel. Russia and Israel have differing views and interests regarding Syria, but that does not make them enemies.

Don't let this give you a false sense of security. Congress also has HJ Res 10 waiting, which is a resolution for military action against Iran, and when that resolution is passed, war WILL be authorized.

I guess the 12 demands weren't enough, so they had to throw this (probably) spurious charge in for good measure, to firmly position Iran as the evil enemy. Most average folk hardly watch the news anyway, and if they do, ithey only read the headlines.

It's very interesting to see this coming from the Brookings Institution given their history. It was Brookings who published Which Path to Persia? in 2009, which was essentially a plan of how to get to war with Iran, including the use of a nuclear deal.
